Rock, Paper, Hammer

Rock, Paper, Hammer

Presented by Circle City Industrial Complex Artists at Circle City Industrial Complex

This exhibit celebrates friendship and whimsy by way of the hand game Rock, Paper, Scissors. The game is usually played between two people and involves each player simultaneously forming one of three shapes with an outstretched hand, representing either rock, paper, or scissors. But in this case hammer takes the place of scissors since Lee is a metalsmith. Murray takes on paper (collage), stone (ceramics), and Lee takes on hammer (metal) together with vitreous enamel.  The artists bring together their work to express ideas about the childhood joys that come with making art.  The two cherish the luxury and privilege of being artists and friends and have curated a body of work that is at once playful and full of wonder. Murray and Lee have elevated rock stacking, Dr. Seuss stories, bugs, flowers, and strange sea creatures into fine art. The two artists have created works that conjure a time when we were all a bit more care free, but bring to it decades of creative experience.
