Fata Morgana

Fata Morgana

Presented by IUPUI Arts and Humanities Institute at Eskanazi Fine Arts Center

Join us during the first week in October for Fata Morgana, three days of music, film, literature, and conversation.

Fata Morgana, a name for a type of mirage, explores the ways in which we imagine and experience the modern world–our aspirations, our fears, our technologies, our institutions.

With 15 music performances and 18 films across four galleries, there is plenty to explore.

Our lineup of performers includes

Onyx Ashanti, self-described “cyborg” musician, inventor, and programmer who builds prosthetic synthesizers that create music in response to his movements. His posthuman, kinesthetic compositions are at the cutting edge of experimental art.
Aurie Hsu, a composer, pianist, and dancer who will be performing in collaboration with composer Steven Kemper, will present a fusion of movement, sound, and technology using musical, dancing robots.
CandyStations, an interdisciplinary artist, who has partnered with musicians such as Sufjan Stevens, St. Vincent, and Bang On A Can with performances at Coachella, Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Museum of Modern Art, Madison Square Garden, and more, will improvise video compositions each evening.

Films explore issues of race, gender, sexuality, surveillance, colonialism, and more. They include

Pariah, directed by Dee Rees, tells the story of Alike (Adepero Oduye), a 17-year-old African American embracing her identity as a lesbian.
The Feeling of Being Watched, directed by Assia Boundaouim, is a documentary film that takes an insider’s look at a Muslim American community that has been under FBI surveillance since the 1990s.
Hale County, This Morning, This Evening, directed by RaMell Ross, is an intimate journey through the world of Hale County, Alabama, offering viewers an emotive impression that examines the beauty of life as well as the consequences of racism.

For those of you who are early risers, join us at 9am on Saturday, October 5, for “Glazed and Confused” — a breakfast of free doughnuts and coffee that features works by Werner Herzog and David Lynch.

All events will be held at the Eskenazi Fine Arts Center on 1410 Indiana Avenue. Parking is free.
