Arising From the Ether

In Ayurveda, which translates to “Science of Life”, Ether is the first of the five universal elements: akasha (ether), vayu (air), agni (fire), apas (water), and prithvi (earth). Ether is the space where everything arises from and where everything returns. It is the mother from which all the other elements are born. Ether is expansive without resistance. It is vast, immeasurable, and all-pervading. Ether has no form, but holds all creative potential, and is pure intelligence. It is home to all objects in the universe. It is space itself. Ether, as space, holds all objects in the universe, the macro and the micro. Yet it does not impose itself on the planets, stars, or life on earth. All these objects of the universe are born from ether’s manifestation, and ether delights in the interaction and transformation of their existence and expression. It does not spend itself trying to change or manipulate them into some static formation. Its amusement is the ever-changing interactions of energy and matter through time.

A fascination with both the scientific and spiritual elements of nature and existence provide a deep well of inspiration for me. My work is an exploration into the process of expressing my inner contemplations through the use of inks and fluid paint. The desire to approach my painting in this way comes from the longing to not only better understand myself and my experiences, but to connect and communicate more authentically with those around me.

My painting practice is a moving meditation. The unpredictable and fluid nature of the paint and inks I work with force me to let go of expectations and stay in the present moment. It requires me to trust my intuition and react to the quickly changing medium. I am always fascinated to watch the pigments move and flow together as I work. It reminds me daily that nothing in our universe remains the same and I am lucky enough to capture a single moment to share with others.
