Memoir Remix: Holiday Playlist

Memoir Remix: Holiday Playlist

Presented by Indiana Writers Center at Indiana Writers Center

Instructor: Darolyn Jones

A playlist is a list of songs that can be played back. With our music on our phones and computers, we can listen to the playlists in our library by artist, song, by theme or just randomly shuffling them. We can create playlists on Spotify or Pandora, even create playlists with video youtube files. We listen to our playlists, but we can also now share and stream those playlists.

Our memories are very much like a playlist, especially during the holidays. We have so many songs on our list, but what are the ones we “replay” every year? Which ones do we play when we have a party? When we are writing? When we need to cry? When we need to laugh? When we travel? What memories are remembered or played (heard in our heads, streamed and shared with others) very much depends on the place we are physically and emotionally in tune. Sound, like smell, can trigger memory recall.

A remix is the reconstruction of a piece of art, whether that is a song, a painting, a video, a photograph, even a book. We most often think of remixes with audio. Songs are often remixed for nightclub dancing, to improve sound quality of an older song, or to remix it for a different listener preferences (i.e. country to rap).

In this workshop session, you will identify your playlist of memories, organize then into playlists, and then we will play with remixing them, re-crafting them.

Bring your earbuds and holiday music if you like, while we write! Note that the class is open to non-holiday music, too. It’s whatever music you feel a connection to that will help you create your remix.
