THE SMART JUSTICE REVOLUTION: FROM RETRIBUTION TO REHABILITATION

Presented by ACLU at The Toby at Newfields

Join us for “The Smart Justice Revolution,” a Spirit & Place event! Attendees are invited to view artwork, followed by a panel discussion, featuring individuals who have had first-hand experiences with Indiana’s criminal justice system. Plus, enjoy refreshments courtesy of Sun King Brewing!

Meet the Panel:

Brandon Buskey – ACLU Deputy Director for Smart Justice Litigation
Brandon has been with the ACLU’s Criminal Law Reform Project since 2012. His work focuses on reforming pretrial justice, expanding the right to counsel, juvenile sentencing, and residency restrictions for former sexual offenders. Prior to the ACLU, Brandon worked at the Equal Justice Initiative and the Civil Rights Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

Chris Holifield – Former New Beginnings Participant
Chris Holifield, is a 2017 graduate of Goodwill’s New Beginnings Program. Chris came to Goodwill with a dream in mind – to never return to prison. He has achieved his dream by graduating from New Beginnings; maintaining a part-time job that led to a full-time position as a supervisor; and has continued to stay connected with New Beginnings by hiring even more of New Beginnings graduates.

Andrew King – RecycleForce Director of Inventory and Quality Control
Andrew King started as a participant at RecycleForce over 10 years ago and is now the Director of Inventory and Quality Control. His main focus at RecycleForce is recycling electronic waste. However, his story through the criminal justice system mirrors all of the participants at RecycleForce. His goal is to help redesign a criminal justice system so that nobody ever has to go through the same hardships he did.

Jeannie Reed – Former PACE Program Participant
Due to her addiction, Jeannie has been incarcerated multiple times throughout her life. The last time she was incarcerated, she spent over a year in the Indiana Department of Correction. During her last incarceration, Jeannie found a pamphlet about PACE. She came to PACE to begin services the week she was released. Not only is Jeannie dedicated to her own recovery, she is dedicated to helping others learn how to navigate their own journey. Jeannie’s humility and compassion allow her to be the best advocate for those navigating both re-entry and recovery. Today, Jeannie has celebrated two years of sobriety. She has maintained employment and has been promoted to management.
