Tinctured Imagery: Precious Art Objects & Other Funny Jokes

Presented by Full Circle Nine Gallery at Full Circle Nine Gallery

“We have a lot of serious stuff to tackle as a human species,” Winship Smith said. “So hopefully the color and fun will lighten folks up and make a little more room within themselves and within their relationships for unpacking some of that more serious stuff that really needs tending to.”

About Nathan Winship Smith

Nathan Winship Smith is an Indianapolis native and has been a practicing ceramicist for 15 years. His childhood love of drawing is reflective in his pottery in an imaginative and illustrative style decorates each piece. Ancient archeological references are made in the overall look of each piece, but, upon closer inspection, a modern flare with a bit of commentary on current events is present within the decorative details.

“Almost every time I create artwork, humor demands to take center stage in the meaning-evoking, process,” Winship Smith explained. “Because the world and life can be so tumultuous, heavy, and full of heartache, it is the humor found in the silly and absurd that get me through and becomes the through-line for the context of the messages my work evokes.”

A newly-named board member with Full Circle Nine Gallery, Nathan Winship Smith also runs the Beech Grove Clay Works, and uses hand-building and wheel-throwing methods to create forms for imagery, ornamentation, and color.
