Art & Soul: Okara Imani, featured artist

Presented by Indy Arts Council at Indianapolis Artsgarden

Featured Artist – Vocal Performance

Okara Imani is a vocalist and writer in Indianapolis. Growing up under the influence of funk, jazz, alternative, and punk sounds, Okara went on to study music classically at Indiana University Fort Wayne (IPFW), where she earned a Bachelor’s in Music in 2016. Okara professionally introduced herself to the Indy music scene when she opened for Bashiri Asad at The Jazz Kitchen, and her career has blossomed to include solo and background vocal performances at venues like The Chatterbox, Square Cat Vinyl, and The Cabaret. Okara compliments her burgeoning music career with more personal writings that reflect on human experiences, dreams, and visions related to blackness/diaspora, queerness, and womanhood. Okara is grateful to hear and be heard, to teach and be taught, and to inspire and be inspired by those who support her.

The Arts Council of Indianapolis celebrates Black History Month with a series of free, daily performances and not-to-be-missed events at the Indianapolis Artsgarden.

This is the 24th year of the Art & Soul celebration, which runs from February 1 – 29, 2020.
