The Story that Grief Built

There’s an old saying that says, “Turn your mess into a message.” That is one way to think about writing stories that relate to our own personal grief. If we dig deep and pull up the pain of our past and present, we can take that pain and create worlds that will release us from some of that pain and move our readers to a potential place of healing. We, as writers, are constantly wading through our own emotional experiences in order to create rich, multi-dimensional characters. This workshop will focus on ways to process our grief and ways to put it on the page.

From the Page to the Stage: Writing Your Feelings
Instructor: Angela Jackson-Brown
Date: Saturday, June 13
Time: 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.
Location: Zoom
Cost: $75 nonmembers, $48 members, $42 student members/teacher members/senior members/military members/librarian members

Words matter in all writing but they particularly matter when we are creating scenes that will be reenacted on the stage, because through our words we are giving our actors the tools necessary to break open the souls of the characters they are playing and reveal those souls to the audience. In this workshop, you will learn how to take your own personal stories and use those stories to create original plays that take the emotions from the page to the stage.

Women Writing, Women Heard: Stories of Grit

Angela Lee Duckworth says that “Grit is sticking with your future day in, day out and not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years.” Her research, writing, and presentations on grit and resistance and resiliency have gone viral.  And in the midst of these COVD-19 times we are living, it seems to me that the world needs to hear how women have survived and thrived despite less pay, less respect, the objectification of our bodies, and the many hurdles we have to overcome to achieve what we want while living in this man’s world.  What are your stories of grit? Women writers: Join Lyn Jones, Education Outreach Director, at the Center in writing your grit memoirs. Show the world up by telling the world your stories!

Gathering & Holding the Pieces, Letting them Speak

In this three hour poetry writing workshop, I will offer a variety of prompts to help you write about difficult, urgent  issues in your life, issues that might have felt shattering to you.

Part of the workshop will involve loose sketching and working with clay.  (You do not need to be a visual artist or to have any art experience to participate!)

Most of the workshop will invite you to write freely and safely, play with shapes and color, and create a handful of burgeoning poems, as well as one rough draft of a poem.
