This reimagined, outdoor production is led by the original team of Ben Rose (Director), Chinyelu Mwaafrika (Marquis), and Joshua Short (Tru).
Police brutality and systemic injustice are once again at the forefront of the nation’s mind. In response, FTC is revisiting Hooded: Or Being Black for Dummies. This timely examination of growing up black in America by rising-star African American playwright, Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm, was a stand-out in our inaugural season and is even more relevant today.
Marquis, a prep-schooler from the suburbs, meets Tru, a street savvy Baltimorean, in a holding cell. Tru thinks Marquis has lost his “blackness” and decides to write a manual: Being Black for Dummies. He assumes the role of professor, but Marquis proves to be a reluctant pupil. They butt heads, debate, wrestle and ultimately prove that Nietzsche and 2pac were basically saying the same thing. What does it really mean to be Black in America today? Why are we asking this question?
Tickets for Hooded, or Being Black for Dummies, as well as the other remaining shows in our inaugural season, are on sale now. Tickets are $25 for regular admission, $20 for 21 and under, and $15 for Near West residents. Performances are held Thursday through Saturday at 8pm and Sundays at 6pm. For this production, we also have the added benefit of being in the fresh air.
