View 23 quilts in this art quilt exhibition. This Quilt exhibition is based on two challenges for The Charm Club – Strip Quilts and Collage Quilts-hence the title Lines and Layers.
Lines and Layers: Charm Club Quilts Exhibition
The title of the show refers to the two themes: strips and collage.
Fabric strips (Lines) have a long history in quiltmaking. For example, the log cabin and the pineapple quilt use multiple fabric strips sewn around a central square of fabric. String piecing uses multiple strips of fabric sewn together and then cut into a new shape, like a triangle or diamond. Many contemporary quilts use improvisational techniques with varying widths of strips. For this challenge, wide latitude was given as to interpretation.
Fabric Collage (Layers) refers to cutting fabric shapes and attaching them to a background fabric in order to create a new image. Shapes may be attached with several types of craft glue or with a heat sensitive paper backed web, like WonderUnder or Steam a Seam, that is ironed onto the fabric. Shapes may be cut into random or specific shapes. Shapes may also be stitched down by hand or machine. Any type of fabric can be used.
