Since the Beginning(s): Native American Oral Traditions and Art

at Online/Virtual Space

Native peoples have called North America home since the beginning. Gather around our virtual fire and listen to Native American artists, culture bearers and experts share how origin stories & traditions are expressed through art!

About the Speakers:

Karen Ann Hoffman is a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and an award winning beadwork artist. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution-NMAI, the Indianapolis Children’s Museum and the State of Wisconsin.
Scott Shoemaker, Ph.D. is a member of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and is also the Thomas G. and Susan C. Hoback Curator of Native American Art, History & Culture at the Eiteljorg Museum. He is a leading figure in the study and recovery of the Miami language and preservation of the traditional art of Miami ribbon work.
Jeremy D. Turner is an enrolled member of the Shawnee Tribe and descendant of the Wyandotte and Seneca-Cayuga Nations. He preserves his culture and heritage by doing re-enactments of the 18th Century French and Indian War and the American Revolution.

Presented by the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in partnership with the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, IUPUI Native American and Indigenous Studies, and the Purdue University Native American Education and Cultural Center.

This engagement is supported by the Arts Midwest Touring Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the Indiana Arts Commission and the Crane Group. Additional support from the Western Arts Alliance is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
