Film: Our National Family Album, A Webinar as Part of the Spirit & Place Festival

Presented by Kan-Kan Cinema at Online/Virtual Space

As part of this year\’s Spirit & Place Festival, the Kan-Kan is hosting an online event, Film: Our National Family Album, on Monday, November 9th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM to discuss a variety of perspectives on film as a storytelling vehicle.

Our discussion will center around how this unique medium is the visual history of our 20th & 21st century lives. Why is it important to preserve these stories of our origins? What do these stories say to us now? What will be the stories from the extraordinary time we are in today?

Our conversation will be enriched by experts in filmmaking, film archiving, and preservation from IU Bloomington Moving Image Archive, Indiana Historical Society, Studio Auteur, and the Kan-Kan Cinema. These guest speakers include Rachael Stoeltje, Director of the IU Libraries Moving Image Archive; Jordan Ryan, Indiana Historical Society Archivist; and Jerald Harkness, CEO of Studio Auteur.

Before our conversation, we urge all attendees to screen the documentary These Amazing Shadows, which tells the story of the National Film Registry, how the visual medium of film is our nation\’s family album and why it matters. It is available to stream on Kanopy (free with public library card or university login), YouTube ($2.99 to rent), Amazon Prime Video ($3.99 to rent), iTunes ($3.99 to rent) and other platforms.

MORE ABOUT THE FILM
These Amazing Shadows is a 2011 documentary film which tells the history and importance of the National Film Registry, a roll call of American cinema treasures that reflects the diversity of film, and indeed the American experience itself, with selections from every genre — documentaries, home movies, Hollywood classics, avant-garde, newsreels, and silent films. American movies tell us so much about ourselves … not just what we did, but what we thought, what we felt, what we imagined, what we aspired to … and the lies we told ourselves. The film, directed by Paul Mariano and Kurt Norton, was an official selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in the Documentary Premieres category.
