November FIRST FRIDAY with the Circle City Industrial Complex Artists

November FIRST FRIDAY with the Circle City Industrial Complex Artists

Presented by Circle City Industrial Complex Artists at Circle City Industrial Complex

Masks are required. Admission and parking are free, general programming starts at 6pm, although times may vary in individual spaces.

+Saturday (pronounced “Plus Saturday”), the First Friday extension day usually held the Saturday after, is on hold at this time, although some arts-related and other businesses may still be open during their regular hours throughout the building.

Larger gallery and studio spaces, as well as other businesses, will be open throughout the building, and Centerpoint Brewing and 8th Day Distillery will have outdoor accommodations in their areas. Signage around the area will point visitors to indoor areas. Per Marion County guidelines, all visitors will be required to wear a mask and maintain social distance.

The artists continue to be thankful for everyone who supported local art during October’s First Friday and were happy with near-universal mask compliance and social distancing, even turning the requirements into contemporary art.

Never really comfortable around large crowds before the pandemic, Jedediah Johnson has begun a photographic series on mask-wearing visitors to the CCIC as a way to process current events.

“The thing that keeps me going is that I love this series of mask portraits. The amount of warmth and depth you can read from these covered faces is extraordinary,” Johnson said. “These images put a human face on the pandemic that gives me hope for the future. Being around strangers makes me uneasy in any case. The pandemic makes that worse. But the work feels important to me so I’m happy to play through the pain.”

For some artists, the monthly art tour has served as an anchor point in an otherwise chaotic time.

“Being able to open my studio on First Fridays and share my work in person again makes me feel grounded. I’m not lost at sea anymore,” Lydia Burris said.

“Amid these difficult times, having even a new version of First Fridays has been something to look forward to each month even more so than before,” Taylor Figg, of One Fine Mess Studio, said. “It has been an opportunity to experience the familiar feeling of excitement, getting to see new and familiar faces coming out to discover and support local artists, for which I know everyone has been grateful.”

As some of the artists have smaller studio spaces, they’ve begun to use larger common areas as extra display space and ask that visitors keep in mind the new locations.

The Circle City Industrial Complex has become a destination for art appreciators and supporters of local work, with the total number of artists working within the CCIC at around 90. Just northeast of the Mass Ave. Art and Theatre Cultural District, at 1125 Brookside Ave., the CCIC Artists First Friday programming is a must-see stop, while events and viewable hours continue throughout the month.

The Main Entrance of the building (identified by its black marble façade) provides easy access to both the South Studios and the North Studios (with a wheelchair accessible ramp and elevator). Maps of the building are also available in several locations to help visitors find all that the building has to offer.

About the Circle City Industrial Complex Artists

The Circle City Industrial Complex (CCIC) is a nearly half-million square foot industrial building, located at 1125 Brookside Ave., and was formerly home to the Schwitzer automotive company. Its industrial appeal remains and artists and artisans have made the space their home, carving cozy studio, work, and show spaces from the concrete and steel structure, and the CCIC Artists have grown in number to over 50 galleries, individual artists and artisans. The main artist entries are the North Studios entrance and the South Studios entrance, each marked with signage along Brookside Avenue. The CCIC provides free parking in a large lot, and is accessible by the Pogue’s Run Trail, connecting to the Monon Trail and the downtown Cultural Trail system. The complex also offers other art-supporting destinations such as the Centerpoint Brewery, Lick Ice Cream, and Eighth Day Distillery and The Fowling Warehouse.
