Have you ever wondered about your ancestors? Who the people were and the circumstances in which they lived their lives that allowed you to be here? In this class we will discuss the ways in which we can use poetry to (re)construct, memorialize, and question our blood or chosen families.
We will talk about the ways in which family lore can be authenticated through official records or genealogical research, and use poetic license to fill in the dash between a person’s date of birth and date of death. This three hour workshop will feature “family” poems by contemporary poets, writing prompts, and discussion about the ways historical facts can be integrated into poems.
