The Indianapolis Opera is the only professional opera company serving the state of Indiana. Over a 40-year history the company has inspired nearly one million audience members with more than 130 productions of the standard and contemporary repertory. The company has built a solid reputation as a regional opera company dedicated to presenting American opera with over 14 different operas featuring composers such as Argento, Bernstein, Floyd, Gershwin, Hoiby, Leigh, Menotti, Moore, Stravinsky, Ward, and Weill. Young professional artists appearing with the Indianapolis Opera have gone on to international careers in the world’s major opera houses including the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Opera Bastille, La Scala, and many more. The Indianapolis Opera provides a needed outlet for local artists in supporting and chorus roles as well as artisans practicing the art of stagecraft.
The educational programs of the Indianapolis Opera reach approximately thirty thousand students annually throughout Indiana and Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky. With a commitment to training young artists, the Indianapolis Opera has played an active role in developing the careers of artists and stage directors.
As a producer of opera, the world’s first multimedia art-form, the Indianapolis Opera has led the way in the Hoosier State consistently delivering a professional product that engages, inspires, and educates the community while simultaneously providing a creative outlet for artists and an economic engine for hundreds of individuals.
At the Indianapolis Opera our core artistic beliefs propel us toward striving for artistic excellence. We believe that the highest and best form of artistic expression begins with the human voice. It is this voice, expressed either singularly or united with others that have the power to inspire the kind of creativity and innovation that is so vital to our community. We believe that the stage should be a forum for communication and engagement, not just entertainment. Finally, it is through the act of musical storytelling that our collective humanity is expressed and defined for generations to come.
At this moment, the Indianapolis Opera is focused on continually reaching new audiences, communicating the profound beauty of the human voice, inspiring the next generation of students in our schools, and creating a home for creative voices at the Frank and Katrina Basile Opera Center. Being excellent community stewards of the artistic, educational, and financial resources entrusted to us is our utmost goal.
