Power to the Patients III

Power to the Patients III

Mural - Temporary

 1202 N. Pennsylvania St, Indianapolis, IN, 46204

Internationally recognized illustrator and graphic artist Shepard Fairey designed this mural, which calls attention to the need for patients to be fully informed as to the cost of their health care interventions before agreeing to a course of treatment. “They need to have the power to make good choices. The ability to be an informed consumer around some of the most unpleasant situations people encounter in their lives, as they have health problems, is extremely important.  It’s enough stress to be in need of healthcare, we don’t need to add to that stress with hidden costs,” said Fairey. Fairey designed the mural based on his own personal negative experiences with paying for healthcare. The informal Power to the Patients movement commissioned artists around the U.S. to paint Fairey’s design in their hometowns so that as many people as possible would be aware of a new law that went into effect on January 1, 2021, mandating that hospitals make their real pricing available online. This mural, one of three in Indianapolis, will be installed for one year, through spring 2022.

The mural was executed by Pamela Bliss, an Indianapolis-based painter and muralist. Bliss began observing and drawing as a young child, which led her to art classes in high school and a bachelor’s degree in studio art. She also attended Indiana University and earned a Masters of Arts Administration degree. She has created dozens of public murals in central Indiana and also pursues commissioned portrait work.
