Sitting at the junction of the National Road and the Wabash River, Vigo County has been a vital player in the transportation of goods to and from Indiana markets. Terre Haute meant “high ground” and reflects early French influence in the area. Paul Dresser, who penned “On the Banks of the Wabash Far Away,” and Theodore Dreiser, author of Sister Carrie, were famed writers, activists and scholars from this county.

This piece has been designed as a series of waves; horizontally in the flowing river, vertically in the swaying sycamores, and horizontally again in the blowing treetops. Below this carved image are words running horizontally.

Designers Jeff Laramore and David Jemerson Young of 2nd Globe, an Indianapolis–based artistic company, designed all 92 of the county sculptures featured on the outside of the Indiana State Museum. Their designs narrate the counties’ famous natives, historically significant events, or their cultural characteristics, and were fabricated and installed by various Indiana sculptors, carvers, glassworkers, metalworkers, and other artisans.
