92 County Walk- Washington County

Architectural Detailing - Outdoor Sculpture

 650 W Washington St, Indianapolis, IN, 46204

Located in southern Indiana’s scenic hills, Washington County was in the path of John Hunt Morgan’s Confederate Raiders during the Civil War. On July 10,1863, the Salem depot was burned, telegraph wires cut and merchants were ransomed in return for the sparing of their stores.

This piece is made up of 7 different-sized square and rectangular blocks, all with holes drilled into the surface. There is a reddish-purple square in the lower right corner. Each hole is illuminated by the glowing of a light placed behind the blocks. The number of holes in this piece corresponds to the actual number of identified caves and sinkholes in Washington County.

Designers Jeff Laramore and David Jemerson Young of 2nd Globe, an Indianapolis–based artistic company, designed all 92 of the county sculptures featured on the outside of the Indiana State Museum. Their designs narrate the counties’ famous natives, historically significant events, or their cultural characteristics, and were fabricated and installed by various Indiana sculptors, carvers, glassworkers, metalworkers, and other artisans.
