Mass Ave Pocket Park at Athenaeum

Outdoor Sculpture

 401 E Michigan St, Indianapolis, IN, 46202

The Athenaeum Foundation enlivened a small portion of greenspace in the Mile Square that was formerly just turf grass. With the support and input of the downtown community, an interactive space was created for nature, art, and gathering. Though small in size, the space brings natural beauty to Massachusetts Ave and furthers the Athenaeum’s values of “sound mind, in a sound body.” Athenaeum staff, tenants, and surrounding community members met with designers from Schmidt Associates to create a draft that was submitted to Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership (INHP) for historic appropriateness.

Committed to creating vibrant places and communities, IPL Project GreenSpace is a grassroots effort that transforms vacant lots and underused spaces into natural, beautiful, and functional pocket parks and greenspaces for neighborhoods in partnership with Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), the City of Indianapolis, and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful inc. (KIBI).
