Peace Unity Power

Peace Unity Power

Mural

 510 E 34th Street, Indianapolis, IN, 46205

This mural expresses both pride in African American heritage and the strength that can be found in communities of color.  The colors red, green, black, and yellow (or gold) are significant to many communities of African descent:  for example, on the Jamaican flag they represent natural resources and beauty (green), the strength and creativity of the people (black), and the hope and promise of abundant sunlight (gold);  red often represents blood spilled during periods of African slavery.

Shortly after the mural was painted, the artist stated, “I went to see a Public Enemy show and Flava Flav did the peace sign, the crossed fingers and the black power fist and he said, ‘Only through peace and unity can we achieve real power.’ …So I put those three hand symbols and that quote on the wall in spray paint.”

In August 2022 the artwork was repaired after a building leak damaged the paint layer. The artist staged a GoFundMe campaign to support the repair effort, and took the opportunity during the repair to update the design.

Robert Bentley attended Broad Ripple High School and the Herron School of Art & Design, IUPUI, earning his B.A. in drawing and printmaking.  Originally a graffiti artist, since 2012 he has been creating commissioned murals using aerosol paint, his preferred medium.
