This eight-story mural is a variation on the internationally known street artist’s popular “Vandal” character, a stand-in for himself who wears a suit and bowler hat like a proper English gentleman, but performs actions of artistic transgression. Here, the Vandal dangles from a yellow ribbon bearing the words “Love Conquers All,” wrapped around a red heart that appears to be breaking into pieces. It is unclear whether the character is trying to repair the heart or, in true street art ironic style, is himself a surprised victim of the damage love can bring.

Nick Walker is originally from Bristol, England and has been working in public since the early 1980s. As a forerunner of the 1990s British graffiti phenomenon exemplified by the artist known as Banksy, Walker’s stencil work has become a blueprint for hundreds of emerging artists worldwide.
