Fountain Square Larry

Fountain Square Larry

Mural

1043 Virginia Ave, Indianapolis, IN, 46203

This two-story portrait honors Larry Mires, aka “Fountain Square Larry,” born in 1941, who passed away on August 29, 2019 after a long battle with cancer.  Mires was a neighborhood legend, owning a record store in Fountain Square even though he was mostly deaf, and hanging out at the Peppy Grill almost every day.  Mires also repaired hot rods and motorcycles, although he had himself stopped riding years prior for safety reasons.  The portrait shows him with his signature gold “Larry” belt buckle and his personal uniform of jeans and boots, posed as if he were still hanging around on the street corners that he loved.

The mural was commissioned by the Murphy Arts Center (Craig von Deylen and family) with art direction by Mike Graves and the Fountain Square-based BRIDGE Collective. It was painted by Indianapolis-based street artist Dan Cents with fabrication assistance by Brian Presnell and the team at Indy Urban Hardwood.  The mural was installed as part of the 2019 Art Squared festival.
