Tree of Dreams
Guided by Sofiya Inger, students will explore the visual language of color and symbols. They will communicate who they are by designing an image on a fabric leaf. In the 3-5 day residency, the leaves can be made into a collaborative wall hanging.
Try It! Virtual Dance Class
Try It! is a beginning class for very young dancers focusing on ballet & jazz styles. Emphasis on large motor skills, rhythm, coordination and basic dance steps, as part of Dance Kaleidoscope’s public class program called DK Kids. During the pandemic, we are offering weekly virtual classes for our students, as well as the public at large. These are great activities for children (of all ages). This video is taught by company dancer Missy Thompson.
Urban Artisans Internship Program
Urban Artisans is an internship program that aids 16-22 year-olds, with and without disabilities, with the transition from school to the workplace. Under the leadership of our professional teaching artists, interns work as a creative team to produce marketable, artistic products in clay, fiber, paints and mosaics. These products are sold in the ArtMix Gallery and in local shops throughout Indianapolis.
Through this program, interns gain artistic, vocational, and social skills that help them in their future endeavors. Many interns have gone on to find employment and/or pursued higher education.
The Urban Artisans program was designed using the standards from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
Virtual DK Kids Dance Workouts
During this time of shelter-at-home, DK is offering free videos of exercise activities aimed at helping children stay fit and to give families activities they can do together. These video feature one of Dance Kaleidoscope’s professional dancers, filmed while they are sheltering-in-place due to COVID-19.
• “Try It” is a beginning class for very young dancers (ages 3-5) focusing on ballet & jazz styles. Emphasis on large motor skills, rhythm, coordination and basic dance steps. Taught by dancer Missy Thompson
• Beginning Ballet (ages 6-10) is the first class of formal ballet instruction, introducing dancers to basic positions, correct body alignment, barre work and terminology. A structured progression that creates the foundation for future dance training. Taught by Paige Robinson

Experience a live actor performance to discover how Ryan White served as an example of overcoming discrimination and intolerance and made a positive difference in the world. Discover how Ryan White conquered fear and hatred. Consider and discuss the ways in which we can continue to combat discrimination and intolerance in our world. Performance followed by a brief post-show discussion to explore how we can make a difference today.
We Are the People (North American Indians)
Eiteljorg Guides will help students compare Native American resources, traditional and contemporary environments, arts and cultures from across North America. A portion of this tour will concentrate on the art, history an cultures of the Miami, Potawatomi, Delaware and other Native peoples of Indiana. View art and artifacts from the museum’s collection as well as those on loan from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. This tour is IDOE Academic -standards based, aligned with the visual arts, language arts and social studies subjects. Wee Do Wap
An introductory jazz performance for young children. Students will learn the fundamentals of jazz, with tunes ranging from Duke Ellington to nursery rhymes. Students will sing along with “Old McDonald Had a Band”, which introduces the live sounds of a trumpet, tenor sax, piano, and drum set.

Dance Kaleidoscope (DK) normally teaches a series of dance classes for children, called DK Kids. During shelter-in-place, our professional dancers/teachers are creating videos that we’re sharing with the community at large in an effort to give back to the city that has supported DK for 48 years.

How do different cultures celebrate holidays and how do they compare to one another? We will have a fun, hands-on morning exploring different cultural celebrations.
Thursday, Jan. 3 | Winter Science
How do snow crystals form? Why do some animals hibernate? How do animals stay warm during the cold, blustery season? Investigate these questions and more as we discover the science of winter.
Friday, Jan. 4 | Art with Bricks
We’ll get creative using bricks of all shapes and sizes to create a variety of print patterns, sculptures and artwork in a rainbow of colors.
Bob Sander will engage students in an interactive program of folktales from around the world. Guitar music is woven into these attention-capturing tales. Bob can tailor the stories to the countries your students are studying.
Worming Into Books by Bonnie Stahlecker
This workshop will capitalize on the student’s knowledge of earthworms by introducing them to bookmaking, illustration and different writing styles. Each student will make a cleverly folded book with room for a long illustration of a worm and four pages of writing. The students will have the choice to create a fictional tale about their worm or they can make their worms realistic and write reports full of worm facts.
Teachers are encouraged to read Herman and Marguerite: An Earth Story by J. O’Callahan or Diary of a Worm, prior to visit.

Young Children's Program
Classes for boys and girls, ages 4 to 7
Designed to spark innate creativity and build a foundation for more in-depth technical training
The Young Children’s program is divided into Creative Movement and Pre-Ballet. These classes are a prelude to formal ballet instruction and introduce children to music and movement through an imaginative progression that encourages creativity, rhythmic awareness, and self-expression.
Classes meet once per week throughout the school year. Classes conclude with the annual “May We Dance” Showcase.
