    Category: Outdoor Sculpture; Temporary
This sculpture, featuring three rings of tubes each with their own primary color and shape, is temporarily on exhibit in the Carmel Arts District at the corner of W Main Street and Veterans Way. The piece was installed in 2017 and created by Herron Art student Scott Osborne. The tube on the east end is made from a series of yellow rectangles. The center tube is made from blue triangles.  The west tube is made from red circles.  Each of the tubes is held together by connecting rods for stability and uses the space between the tube pieces to make the overall tube shape arc forward. Scott Osborne was a senior at Herron School of Art majoring in Integrated Studio Practices with a focus in sculpture and illustration when he made this sculpture. Osborne is currently a freelance artist in Indianapolis.

This 42-ft-high sculpture represents three pink roses, their gold and silver stems wrapped in a steel ribbon.  There is also a small surprise, hidden in plain sight, for viewers to enjoy discovering. According to the artist, roses are beautiful, universally-understood symbols with many meanings, all of them positive. Three roses means “I love you,” and a pink rose stands for happiness, grace, gratitude and joy. The artist hopes that the message uplifts viewers, and beautifies the neighborhood. Arlon Bayliss is a sculptor based in Anderson, Indiana. Originally trained as a studio glass artist and designer, and after serving as the founding director of the studio glass program at Anderson University, since 2014 he has moved his practice to architectural-scale projects in metal, glass, and light.

Three sports-themed sculptures by artist Jorge Blanco grace the roundabouts at Main Street, 116th St., and 126th St. on Hazel Dell Parkway in Carmel.  The powder coated aluminum figures were installed to pay homage to the youth sports taking place in the many nearby athletic fields and green spaces. Kick, Home Run, and On Wheels were all installed in 2017. Home Run features three baseball players (a batter, catcher, and umpire) in bright, primary colors.  The batter has just taken a mighty swing.  From the profile side, the characters look simple and two dimensional, but from the front and rear, the piece can be seen to be made up of multiple layers of aluminum with spacers adding dimension. Jorge Blanco is a Venezuelan-born sculptor based in Sarasota, Florida. His work, characterized by simple shapes, bright colors, and narrative immediacy, are installed in public and private collections internationally.

The word “reckon” is a slang term for the process of thinking. To reckon is to arrive at a deduction or conclusion using intuitive thinking and approximate guessing. The structure of the sculpture, with its bold shapes and vibrant colors, is that of a radiant energy – both a sun and a flower, both provider and receiver. It implies reaction and expansion, and the vitality of living energy.  The artwork not only adds to the aesthetic value of the landscape, but also serves as a visual barrier to help keep motorists’ attention directed to the left as they enter the roundabout. The artist, Brad Howe, began his career in Brazil after studying history at the University of Sao Paulo. His work presents the influence of inquiry into the aesthetics of various cultures and distinct movements in the continuum of art history. He is a native of Riverside, California and makes his home in Los Angeles.  Reckon was purchased by the City of Carmel from the artist.
