  • Eye 2 Eye
    Eye 2 Eye
    Category: Mural
Eye 2 Eye depicts the early moments of what could become a meaningful friendship for two new and very different acquaintances.  The soft and fluffy, curious cat and the hard and angular machine, both creatures of the street, examine each other closely, recognizing one thing they have in common: green eyes. The mural is a metaphor for everyone being able to find commonalities with each other, even if they are from different worlds. Dan Handskillz is a commercial artist, muralist, street artist, illustrator, and graphic designer working in Indianapolis. Growing up near this site, his love for art began by reading graffiti magazines, watching “Style Wars,” and learning from his friends. He was drawn to the medium by the community and social aspects that surround it–but he admits he was “just a kid who loved comics and graffiti” and started doing graffiti art in his first crew while still in high school. A graduate of Herron School of Art + Design, IUPUI, Dan began by studying painting and eventually switched to general fine art. He and his old high-school crew eventually went into business together and worked as a team on commissioned graffiti-style murals from 2010-2019 under the name Fantastic Aerosol Brothers (FAB) Crew. Dan was also instrumental in organizing the annual Subsurface graffiti jam, which ran from 2002-2015. Currently a freelance illustrator, Dan continues to create commissioned murals, and has worked for clients as varied as the Indiana Pacers, IndyGo, Red Bull, Subaru, Uber, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This mural was created in 2021 as part of the Jiffy Lube Murals, a collaboration between Jiffy Lube of Indiana and the Arts Council of Indianapolis.

    Hart Bakery Murals
    Category: Commercial; Mural
Hart Bakery has been an east side institution since Joe Hart opened it after World War II. Sandy Taylor, who worked as a cake decorator for Joe for many years, bought the business in 1992 and continued to build on his success. Artist Ans Taylor, the daughter-in-law of owner Sandy Taylor, painted two murals illustrating the history of the bakery. The first panel depicts founder Joe removing loaves of bread from the oven. The second panel shows Sandy decorating a cake. Ans Taylor is a figurative oil painter from Germany living in Arizona. Her whimsical contemporary portraits combine colorful characters with the critters and cacti of the Southwest.

    In Memory of Unborn Children
    Category: Memorial/Monument
This installation on the grounds of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, current as of 11/3/2022, honors all unborn children. Although it is in the tradition of roadside memorials and visually resembles one, it is more in keeping with the tradition of placing a descanso or crucita–an informal memorial cross–at the site of an unexpected death to allow passersby to pray for the unshriven soul in Purgatory.
  • Rightway Auto Mural
    Rightway Auto Mural
    Category: Commercial; Mural
Artist Nick Smith (aka Nick Abstract) was commissioned by Rightway Automotive to produce an angular mural utilizing their brand colors. Angled next to a busy intersection, this mural sees a tremendous amount of daily traffic on the southeastern side of Indianapolis. Customers drop their keys into the dropbox on the front door of this structure, and the mural concept angles toward these substrates so that customers “interact” in a way with the mural itself. Nick Smith is an Indianapolis-based color-blind contemporary artist, specializing in urban abstraction. His works are inspired by architectural geometries in contemporary infrastructure with stylistic nods to graphic design and style writing.
  • The Explorers
    The Explorers
    Category: Mural
This mural features abstract geometric figures in bright colors. This is a common theme for the artist Kent Brinkley. These futuristic figures appear to have hats, bowties, and umbrellas. Kent Brinkley is a freelance artist in Indianapolis creating abstract art including paintings, collages, and sculptures. The intent of his art is to express and elicit emotions in an interactive way. Brinkley uses paintbrushes as well as a variety of other materials such as bits of cardboard, my hands, paper, and other items to create unique textures.
