Standing over 12 feet tall at its highest point, this interactive and visually striking stainless steel sculpture sits prominently at the main intersection of downtown Mooresville within Bicentennial Park. It was designed by Rundell Ernstberger Associates and fabricated locally by Linel.
The symbolism of this piece draws from the Town’s proud heritage as being the home of the state flag; the piece was commissioned to mark the centennial anniversary of the flag’s adoption. The center torch in the state flag stands for liberty and enlightenment. Complementing the Town’s gateway signage, the abstracted flame has a mirrored finish on the north side, encouraging visitors to view reflections of themselves and others in a playful manner on the curved surfaces while also reminding individuals of the liberty and unity that each person possesses in their own community. The wave texture on the south side of the sculpture further emphasize its form and provide unique visual interest for those passing by.
The integration of in-grade lighting illuminates the surfaces with a stunning view into the evening hours and allows for opportunities to adapt the color scheme to celebrate different events, seasons, or holidays.
