Lux Aeterna was commissioned in 2015 and installed in 2016 to honor the Bicentennial of the State of Indiana. Its unique form is inspired by the torch in the state flag and speaks of light and illumination, knowledge and courage. Its prominent curves complement the surrounding classical architecture of Indiana limestone.
The sculpture is made from aircraft-grade steel and laminated, colored glass.  The open structure of the piece allows the sun to penetrate it any time of day, giving it color and energetic life.  At night, eight luminaries placed in the base of the sculpture provide directed light to make the flame-colored glass glow. This is truly an “eternal flame.”
The artist, Osman Akan, was born in Turkey and received his B.F.A. in Graphic Design from Ankara’s Bilkent University before moving to the United States and pursuing his M.F.A. in Critical Studies and Integrated Media from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).  Akan is known for his use of unusual materials and his large scale installations, which he has completed on commission since the early 2000s. His early works integrated texts into animation utilizing video and sounds, and he has been working with light as a medium, especially with optical fibers, since 2004.  He works internationally from his New York-based studio.  Akan’s personal stake in this project was inspired by his familiarity with Indiana through his wife, who is a native Hoosier.  Learn more about the artist at http://www.osmanakan.com/
