Time Flow was commissioned in 2015 to honor the 2016 Bicentennial of the State of Indiana. The multi-part artwork references the character of the state in both material and gesture – preserving the past and open to the future. It was designed to complement the stately architecture of the Indiana Statehouse.
There are three major elements to the piece, which as a whole symbolizes Indiana’s diverse mix of people and varied landscapes. The main element is a polished, stainless-steel ring supported by slabs of carved Indiana limestone. The carvings are patterns that are representative of imagery from all over the state. The ring represents a portal, through which the viewer is symbolically moving from one point in time to another. The two other elements of the piece are scattered around the plaza–also designed by the artist–and are a dwarf tulip poplar (the state tree) and a “water table” of solid limestone, carved with a map of the state highlighting its major waterways.
The artist, Bloomington-based Dale Enochs (working on this project in association with Tom Fansler III), has created many large-scale artworks for public and private settings in Indianapolis and internationally, including China and Japan. He works primarily in stone, often incorporating contrasting materials such as steel, bronze and copper.
