Preservation experts explain recent challenges of preserving this Indianapolis icon and how a daredevil team scaled the memorial’s ziggurated top to find the source of leaks damaging interior plaster and murals.
In downtown Indianapolis, it’s hard to miss the Indiana War Memorial, a temple-like limestone monument rising several stories above street level. Dedicated in 1933 to honor Hoosier veterans of World War I, it’s an architectural showstopper. But it’s been shrouded in scaffolding since late last summer as crews implement much needed repairs.
