The Salt Lake City Department of Airports (SLCDA or City) invites artists and artist-led teams to submit qualifications for The New SLC Art Wall as part of their Airport Terminal Redevelopment Program (ARP or The New SLC).

The Salt Lake City International Airport (Airport) is evolving to meet the region’s growing needs and demands of the Airport’s role as an international hub. The New SLC Airport will be built in two phases, with the first phase set for completion in 2020. The SLCDA has contracted with a national public art consultant to develop a comprehensive art master plan, which includes the Airport’s New SLC Art Wall opportunity.
This artist selection committee seeks an artist or artist-led team that can produce a site-specific artwork that:
The New SLC Art Wall dimensions are 30’ 2” wide x 11’ 7 ½” high and will be situated in a high-visibility area with heavy foot traffic. Artists responding to this call must demonstrate a proficiency in executing work of similar scope and scale. Submission materials should reflect the ability of the artist or artist-led team to respond to The New SLC Art Wall as a high-touch area.
Artists should keep in mind that the final installation must be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials. The New SLC Art Wall will be in a climate controlled environment. Installations should not include electricity, audio/visual technology, or water and should be designed and produced with environmentally-conscious practices in mind. The Salt Lake Art Design Board, in consultation with SLCDA project partners/managers, will review all properly submitted applications and will short-list three (3) finalists to offer artwork for review. The Salt Lake Art Design Board will then recommend an artist or artist-led team, and one alternate, for the commission to the Mayor for final approval. Only the selected artist or artist-led team will enter into a design agreement with the City. The alternate will enter into a design agreement only in the case that the proposal submitted by the primary selected artist is not accepted by the Art Design Board, SLCDA, and the Mayor of Salt Lake City.
The selected finalists will enter into a two-party Agreement between City and the artist/team for design development. Once an artist’s design is selected and approved, they will enter into a second two-party agreement between the City and the artist/team. The selected artist/team will be required to provide General Liability and Auto insurance as specified in the Agreement.
SELECTED ARTIST SITE VISITS
Once the three selected finalists and the City enter into a design/development contract, the selected finalists will participate in at least two (2) site visits. The first of two site visits is meant to orient the selected finalists with the project and to hear from and ask questions of the community, Salt Lake City Art Design Board, SLCDA, and other project partners.
During the second site visit, the selected finalists will present their conceptual proposals to the Salt Lake City Art Design Board and SLCDA project partners. The site-specific proposals should convey their ideas and plans through scale designs, renderings and/or scale models with a statement that describes, in detail, the project’s intent, proposed materials, fabrication and installation methods, project schedule and an itemized budget.
For the first visit, the finalists will receive a $1,000 travel stipend which is inclusive of travel expenses, hotel, meals, etc.
For the second visit, a $2,000 travel stipend and honorarium will be awarded to the finalists for their proposals and is all inclusive of design, travel expenses, shipping, etc.
The selected finalists must email a color rendering of the proposal to Kat Nix, Salt Lake City Public Art Program Manager, by Thursday, June 20, 2019, by 5:00 p.m. MDT. Materials will be distributed to the Design Board and SLCDA project partners prior to the finalists’ presentation.
One artist or artist-led team’s proposal will be accepted by the Salt Lake City Art Design Board, the artist and the City will enter into the second two-party agreement. The selected artist/team will be required to provide General Liability and Auto insurance as specified in the Agreement.
After that agreement is executed, the selected artist or artist led team must be present for installation and is required to remain on site for the duration of the installation, which will be coordinated by the Public Art Program Manager and the SLCDA.
The artist or artist-led team will be responsible for all expenses incurred for travel for the installation of the artwork and should budget accordingly from the awarded commission.
WHAT AND HOW TO SUBMIT
Artists may apply individually or as a team. Artists interested in this project must prepare and submit all of the following information and documentation via the CaFÉ™ website no later than 11:59p.m. Mountain Time on April 17, 2019. There is no application fee to apply or to use the CaFÉ™ online application system. No other method of submission will be accepted. Incomplete applications will NOT be considered. The applicant’s name must appear on all materials submitted.
Any materials not specifically requested as part of this application or exceeding the maximum page length or format requirements will not be considered or reviewed by the Selection Committee. Applicants may not receive notification if their application has been disqualified.
