Newfields Seeks Volunteers for Community Meal

Volunteer Opportunity with Newfields
At the Crossroads: A Community Meal
Training Sessions (attend one): September 19th, 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. or September 21st, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Event date: September 28, 2019

Newfields is looking for volunteers to help with a very important new endeavor: At the Crossroads: A Community Meal. Artist Seitu Jones and Public Art Saint Paul imagined a living artwork that would ignite conversations about food, food access and food justice in the core city with the idea of changing the urban food system. Newfields is bringing this concept to Indianapolis as part of their Harvest programming to address the ways in which 100 years of racially biased housing and environmental policies have led to the formation of some of this country's worst food deserts. Volunteers will be helping to bring this inspirational idea to life in two significant ways:

Facilitators: Training will be provided for this key role. Facilitators will be placed at each table grouping primarily to tie the conversation to the history of racially biased housing and environmental policies that have led to economic deserts throughout Indianapolis, using the 400 ft. table runner as a touch point/object lesson. Essentially, these individuals are in place to help our table hosts and guests navigate what may be a difficult conversation and to diffuse any potential friction that may arise.

Greeter / Server: These volunteers will be in charge of greeting guests as they arrive, getting them to the right table, and then serving the meal.

Where else would you get the opportunity to greet and serve over 300 guests at a 400 foot long table placed smack dab in the middle of 39th Street between Illinois and Meridian Streets, just south of Tarkington Park?! This is sure to be one volunteer opportunity for the ages. Sign up to be a part of this historic event now and please feel free to invite your entire village to help pitch in too! All volunteers will be able to sign up to help out here for one of two training sessions.

The only requirement for volunteers is to attend one of the two training sessions on 9/19 and 9/21. Other than that, open hearts and minds and listening ears will certainly be useful tools at the table.
