The Port of San Diego invites professional artists and artist groups to submit their qualifications for the Harbor Park Call for Artists opportunity. This is a unique opportunity for artists to create innovative and engaging permanent public artworks on Port tidelands.

Budget: $195,000

Eligibility:  Professional artists residing in and legally able to work in the United States

Deadline: 7/11/2020

Project Description

As part of the Port of San Diego's Chula Vista Bayfront project, Harbor Park will be established as a new Port park along the Chula Vista waterfront. Pursuant to the Port's BPC Policy 609: Public Art Programs, 1% of the total project budget will be allocated to the acquisition of public art. Artwork Location Description
Harbor Park will be a vibrant and active regional waterfront destination that reconnects the City of Chula Vista and surrounding communities to the Bay. Diverse park features include an expansive bayside lawn, picnic groves, a family play area, destination pier, an iconic beach framed by terraced headlands, and a beach front café with dramatic views to downtown San Diego’s skyline and the Coronado Bridge. The park will be activated by watersport rentals, and diverse programmed events and activities.

Artwork Goals

  • Explore the unique waterfront landscape including the bay, beach and sky
  • Explore human experience, dialogue, and interaction between: people –people, people – bay, people – urban/industrial landscape, and people – place.
  • Bring energy, engagement and visual excitement to the community through interactive or kinetic works.

Timeline

Selected artists/artist teams will begin working with Port staff and park planners in the fall of 2020 to develop and integrate their artwork concepts. The project is expected to take several years to complete.

What to Submit

  1. Artist Statement
  2. Resume/CV
  3. 5 digital images or video files of past completed work: do not include artwork proposals or concepts. Detail shots may be submitted as part of the five (5) digital images/videos. Video files must be no more than 30 seconds each. Applications will not be considered complete if any of the following fields are left blank: Title, dimensions, budget, materials, location. Do not attach one portfolio file with multiple images.
