Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, through its Art in Public Places (APP) Program, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCCL), and PortMiami, request qualifications from professional artists and/or artist teams to commission integrated artworks for a new headquarters building and campus redevelopment.

Budget: $3,515,750 (multiple commissions of varying dollar values and scales)

Project Description
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. envisions an iconic new home for RCCL and an expansion of its presence with a landmark facility on the Port of Miami. The project encompasses the renovation of two prominent existing buildings, the construction of a new, state of the art HQ facility and accompanying new garage, and a dynamic program of open green spaces and waterfront activations. When viewed from Downtown Miami, the new HQ building flows up from the water’s edge, undulating and terracing back to create an auditorium, sheltered outdoor spaces, and eventually culminating in a three level garden atrium space at the pinnacle. This volumetric outdoor space brings the healing power of nature right into the heart of the building, reinforcing RCCL’s commitment to wellness. While a wonderful experience for employees, it will also define the building as an icon and symbol of the RCCL brand.

Shortlisted Artists will receive a proposal honorarium commensurate to the number of proposals they present, as well as an allowance for travel-related expenses for personally attending the recommended meetings in Miami-Dade County, including the Artist Orientation and final proposal presentation meeting.

Artwork Goals
The selected artist(s) will design unique artwork(s) that will contribute to the identity of this development and engage employees, visitors and passers-by in unexpected and delightful ways.

Artwork Location Description

The new RCCL HQ office building is 10 stories high at 365,000 GSF and fluctuates in footprint between levels. The building mimics a cruise ship in its changing floor plates, the horizontal striated bands on the exterior, terraced decks, and undulating form. It contains largely office space, but also includes a double height entry lobby, cafeteria, auditorium, and event space at the topmost level. The RCCL Campus redevelopment encompasses the renovation of two major existing office facilities on site, the 1080 and 1050 Buildings. Each building will also incorporate major new atrium additions.

NEW HEADQUARTERS BUILDING

  • Lobby environment: ceiling suspended sculpture and / or light-based artwork, design for glass railings, potential for double height two dimensional or time-based feature.
  • Terrazzo: Working closely with RCCL’s design teams, artists are invited to propose site specific terrazzo applications within the larger field of defined terrazzo mix/color. Largest opportunities within the cafeteria zones and lobby.

SITE WORK: CENTRAL GREEN

  • Central Quad feature: Landscape and / or integrated site-specific sculptural elements, possible water feature
  • Paver design: artist-designed hardscape for Central Quad

SITE WORK: CANOPIES AND PAVERS

  • Paver design: artist-designed hardscape for pathways throughout entire campus more than 35,265 SF
  • Canopies: design for underside of pedestrian canopies sheltering pathways in the form of cladding and or surface treatment (high density wood such as teak or IPE preferred).

SITE WORK: ENTRANCE FEATURES

  • Entrance features within the roundabouts for each of the three (3) RCCL facilities in the form of artist-designed landscape elements, site-specific installations, and/or water features

SITE WORK: FENCING & PLAYGROUND

  • Artist-designed fencing (1,142 feet) between RCCL campus and the MSRC docks
  • Artist-designed children’s playground & screening / fencing elements

RENOVATION: NEW ATRIA

  • Features within new atrium additions may include signature walls, cladding, pavers, site specific installations and stand-alone artworks.

RENOVATION: LOBBIES

  • Suspended artwork, free-standing sculpture, feature walls, two dimensional artworks, integrated seating elements, and lighting elements.

RENOVATION: TERRAZZO

  • Site specific terrazzo applications within the larger field of defined terrazzo mix/color. Largest areas within lobbies & cafeteria areas within the existed 1050 and 1080 buildings.

Selection Process
Pursuant to the processes of the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places Program, a three-member group of art and architectural professionals drawn from the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) will recommend a shortlist of artists to create full proposals to the Art in Public Places Trust. If appropriate, the PAC reserves the right to recommend artists who may not have applied to this Call.

Upon being recommended to prepare full proposals, shortlisted artists will receive detailed information regarding the opportunities for public art. Artists will also be invited to attend a site visit and Artist Orientation meeting, and will have the opportunity to meet with the client, including the design & the construction teams, and Art in Public Places staff.

Shortlisted Artists will receive a proposal honorarium commensurate to the number of proposals they present, as well as an allowance for travel-related expenses for personally attending the recommended meetings in Miami-Dade County, including the Artist Orientation and final proposal presentation meeting. Artists may choose to present their final proposals via video conference. Art in Public Places staff will be available to support inquiries throughout the process. Upon the presentation of proposals, the PAC will again make recommendations for final commissions to the Art in Public Places Trust for their consideration.

Selection Criteria
The primary criteria for shortlist selection will be previous artistic accomplishment as demonstrated in images of completed artwork, public art experience, and/or initial design approach to the project as demonstrated in the artist’s statement.

What to Submit
Applicants are required to submit the following materials:

  1. 10 samples of completed work. Artists are encouraged to identify each work sample with the medium, dimensions, date, location, client/agency, size, budget, completion date (if applicable), and brief written description. Artists who work in video, sound, installations, and kinetic sculpture may submit a short selection of video, audio or dynamic media file.
  2. a CV/resume
  3. a brief artist statement.

Artists are not invited to submit proposal concepts at this time.
