Jerry L. Barnett was born in Evansville, and grew up in Booneville, the son of a coal miner. He was encouraged by his 5th grade art teacher to become an artist. In January of 1956 after graduating high school, he began his studies at Herron School of Art, where he met his wife. His figure drawing instructor often scolded him for drawing the model’s nose too big. He left Herron two and a half years later to work as a freelance artist, and then at the Indianapolis Star & News, in the City Room in 1960. His job there was to touch up photos before publication A few years later, he was hired to do his dream job as Editorial Cartoonist until he left in 1999 when the Indianapolis New paper folded. He has drawn thousands of cartoons, poking fun at both Republicans and Democrats. He has lots of stories to share about the famous people he has met, and how cartooning has changed over the years. He is 84 years young and still drawing cartoons for syndication from his south side home in Indianapolis.
