The Indiana State Museum will screen Empire of Dreams (1880-1942), an episode from the three-part, six-hour documentary series Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, followed by a panel discussion on Saturday, April 30 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the museum. The program will focus on the rich and varied experiences of Latino immigrants who helped shape America.
“We will be showing Empire of Dreams, the second episode from the documentary, with the hope of fostering a broader understanding of the complex and often overlooked history of Latino immigrants in Indiana,” said Joanna Hahn, manager of school programs at the museum. “This is a story of immigration and redemption, of anguish and celebration and the gradual development of a new American identity that connects many of our Hoosiers today.”
Panel discussion participants include:
• John Nieto-Phillips, associate professor of History, Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., and
• Edward Garza, president of El Popular, Mexican food brands, East Chicago, Ind.
The documentary debuted nationally on PBS in the fall of 2013.
The program is free and open to the public.
Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, a public programming initiative produced by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA), is part of an NEH initiative, The Common Good: The Humanities in the Public Square.
