Lauren Zoll: Wavelength

Zoll is exhibiting two bodies of work, each comprised from her interest in capturing light through experimental painting.  Fleeting light, reflected light, ultraviolet light and absorbed light all play significant roles in the works exhibited.  Wavelength refers to repeated forms and inquiries through her creative process.

BLACK REFLECTANCE PAINTINGS

This series originated from Zoll’s interest in the ability to close our eyes and still see from a black space. By manipulating house paint to form a highly reflective surface, these paintings encourage viewers to look within the black space to ultimately see reflections from surrounding environments. She refers to this body of work as Other Side of Black. Recently, Zoll reflects objects into the paintings until the light changes or until she paints the reflection away.  In some paintings she chooses to abstract the reflection creating an entirely new vision, and in other works she photographs the paintings’ reflections.

BLACK BEAN PAINTINGS

Zoll has developed ink, or Anthocyanin dye, from black beans by exploring ways to recreate nature’s technology of photosynthesis. These bean ink paintings are a documentation of this ongoing process. The paintings on exhibit are made by pouring ink directly onto archival watercolor panels, often directly over the beans themselves creating a bean like image. These paintings and their organic chemistry will slowly oxidize over time.
