The Butler University Wind Ensemble closes our 2023-2024 season with a BANG, and you won’t want to miss this explosive concert featuring our very own Jon Crabiel, and his terrific percussion studio.
We open the program with Michael Barry’s Boomba. This explosive concert opener links together jazz and contemporary styles in a new way for wind ensemble.
We complete the first half of the program featuring the music of contemporary composer Viet Cuong. Called “alluring” and “wildly inventive” by The New York Times, the music of American composer Viet Cuong has been performed on six continents by musicians and ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, Eighth Blackbird, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Sō Percussion, Alarm Will Sound, Atlanta Symphony, Sandbox Percussion, Albany Symphony, PRISM Quartet, and Dallas Winds, among many others. Cuong’s music has been featured in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center, and his works for wind ensemble have amassed several hundreds of performances worldwide. Passionate about bringing these different facets of the contemporary music community together, his recent projects include a concerto for Eighth Blackbird with the United States Navy Band.
We feature our graduate percussion students and their teacher, Jon Crabiel on Cuong’s Re(new)al; a concerto for percussion quartet and wind ensemble that will transport the listener into another world of color and sound. We close the first half with Cuong’s Sound and Smoke, which takes its inspiration from Faust and the winner of the Walter Beeler Prize for composition in 2012.
The second half of the program opens with 2023 Concerto Competition Winner, Ella Sailer, performing Chin Cheng Lin’s Marimba Concerto No. 1. This performance marks the premiere of the complete wind ensemble version.
Finally, with the buzz surrounding the new biopic Maestro, we had to conclude our season with the Candide Suite, music by Leonard Bernstein, and transcribed for wind ensemble by Clare Grundman. What a wonderful way to end our season of music making, creating, and giving!
