Sport Literate: Honest Reflections on Life’s Leisurely Diversions with Bill Meiners & Nick Reading

Join editor-in-chief, Bill Meiners, and poetry editor, Nick Reading, for a day of reading, writing, and editing. In this workshop we will look at the tradition of writing about sport in literature. With a focus on creative nonfiction and poems, we will use the literary journal “Sport Literate: Honest Reflections on Life’s Leisurely Diversions” to consider writing that seeks to engage subjects that some people consider just busy time for knuckleheads. We will consider how sport and leisure have played a role in our lives and in the lives of SL authors. In the end, we will identify writing strategies that allow for honest reflections on the pastimes, competitions, wins, losses, loyalties and injuries that have shaped us. Along with reading and discussion, time will be spent generating ideas and material. We will also be available to discuss our editorial process and the qualities that raise an essay or poem above the rest.

In a nutshell we will plan on the following:

• reading writing and discussing writerly strategies
• generating ideas and material for writing projects
• discussing qualities Sport Literate editors look for in submissions
