The Long and Short of It: Writing Japanese Poetry Forms

Wouldn’t it be nice if a person could sit down to write and then leave knowing they have something to show for it? They can! With a focus on brevity, immediacy, and accessibility, Japanese forms of poetry are written all over the world today for this very reason. In this two-session class, participants will learn the history, elements, and techniques of Japanese poetry. In session one, writers will explore the short forms of tanka and haiku. In session two, participants will learn how to transform these short forms into the longer forms of haibun (prose + haiku) and tanka prose (prose + tanka). Come and see why both beginning and advanced writers find writing Japanese forms of poetry one of the most fun experiences they have encountered!
