Part 2 of the workshop takes place at the IPS/Butler Lab School 60. During this 3 hour workshop, we will visit with Abby Bucher and learn more about what Reggio-inspired practice can look like in a public school in Indianapolis. We will take a tour and notice environments, we will do some materials exploration that can then be put into practice in your own setting, and we will look at a couple of projects that have been done with students in Indianapolis that shows how we have been inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach.

The World of Strings by Cathy Morris
Students will learn about the role of stringed instruments beyond classical music, as performed on acoustic and electric string instruments. Students will enjoy samplings of country music, rock music and more.
Theater-Dance by Giselle Trujillo
Do you have kinesthetic-tactile learners in your classroom? In this workshop, Giselle explores a topic in your curriculum using her multi-sensory approach of theater and dance. Through her workshop she is able to connect your curriculum to activities in both theater and dance: making sure all modalities of learning are touched upon, specifically, kinesthetic, visual, and auditory. Her workshop consists of using props related to your content as well as student’s collaborative work – the end result is a beautiful creative expression, choreographed by your students, that enhances the content area of your choice. Curriculum connections include but are not limited to: the solar system, history, math, language arts and social studies.
Theme & Variations on the Violin by Cathy Morr...
A demonstration of musical styles including classical, Celtic, country, bluegrass, and jazz using acoustic and unique electric violins. Students will learn about the cultural and geographic regions represented by the music, and will have a chance to try playing a violin.
These Stories Go Beyond Any Test
Through theatrical readings, students explore life-long learning themes such as accepting each other’s differences, working as a team, and facing our fears. Choose from children’s literature selections that will compliment your students’ needs.
This Little Light of Mine by Deborah Asante
Listeners will experience the story of the Children’s Crusade of 1963 through the eyes of one of the children who marched. Students will learn more about this dramatic event from the U.S. Civil Rights Movement.
Thomas Edison: Inside the Inventors Minds
Thomas Edison had 1,093 patents, more than any other American, living or dead. This interactive one-man play by Hank Fincken will discuss the process that led to the electric light, the gritty nuts and bolts day to day business of the inventive business with its failures, team-approach, and eventual success.

Toddler Art Groups at Newfields
The Newfields Toddler Art Groups (TAG) program engages preschools in the Indianapolis area through a multi-visit early learning program. Partnering preschools visit Newfields for TAG time throughout the year. During TAG time, students explore art through storytelling, dramatic play, music, art making, and art hunts in the IMA Galleries.
Tree of Dreams
Guided by Sofiya Inger, students will explore the visual language of color and symbols. They will communicate who they are by designing an image on a fabric leaf. In the 3-5 day residency, the leaves can be made into a collaborative wall hanging.
Urban Artisans Internship Program
Urban Artisans is an internship program that aids 16-22 year-olds, with and without disabilities, with the transition from school to the workplace. Under the leadership of our professional teaching artists, interns work as a creative team to produce marketable, artistic products in clay, fiber, paints and mosaics. These products are sold in the ArtMix Gallery and in local shops throughout Indianapolis.
Through this program, interns gain artistic, vocational, and social skills that help them in their future endeavors. Many interns have gone on to find employment and/or pursued higher education.
The Urban Artisans program was designed using the standards from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
Viewfinders: A School to Museum Program
The Viewfinders Program is a school partnership program active in many elementary schools throughout the city of Indianapolis. Through Viewfinders, Newfields trains classroom teachers to utilize Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), a teaching technique that gives students the opportunity to share their ideas, build new perspectives, and learn to disagree respectfully – all while looking at and talking about works of art.
The Viewfinders Program uses VTS because it is a research-based teaching method that has been shown to improve the critical thinking and language skills of students who consistently participate in these open-ended discussions. Though the discussion is about a work of art, the skills that students develop as they make observations and support their ideas with evidence are relevant in all subject areas. VTS can be easy to learn and offers teachers a proven strategy to meet the current demands of the classroom. Find out more about Visual Thinking Strategies.
The Viewfinders Program provides teachers with professional development throughout the school year with workshops and in-class coaching. Teachers facilitate a number of VTS lessons with students using carefully selected artworks. These lessons help students develop their looking, thinking, and communication skills while exposing them to a wide variety of artworks. The final component of the program provides students the opportunity to visit The IMA at Newfields in the spring to exercise their new skills in front of real works of art.
The Viewfinders Program meets many existing Indiana Academic Standards.

Vocal Recital Program: Journey Through the Eras
Our recital series, Journey Through the Eras, features the beauty and power of the human voice in a variety of genres: opera, musical theater, art song, and classic “crooner tunes” as they developed over time. If you have a particular request for a program theme, let us know!
Healthy singing and performing techniques are demonstrated in collaborative settings through our vocal workshops: Opera-ting for theatrical performing and Singing For Success for a choral environment. Our Resident Artists will demonstrate healthy singing techniques through performance, as well as discussion/teaching. These workshops can be tailored to the desires of the presenting organization. We can work with your students on specific skills, including breathing, diction, interpretation, etc. upon request. The theatrical workshop also adds staging and other dramatic interpretive elements.
Voices of Hope: Ryan's Story -- Live Actor Perform...
Experience a live actor performance to discover how Ryan White served as an example of overcoming discrimination and intolerance and made a positive difference in the world. Discover how Ryan White conquered fear and hatred. Consider and discuss the ways in which we can continue to combat discrimination and intolerance in our world. Performance followed by a brief post-show discussion to explore how we can make a difference today.
We Are the People (North American Indians)
Eiteljorg Guides will help students compare Native American resources, traditional and contemporary environments, arts and cultures from across North America. A portion of this tour will concentrate on the art, history an cultures of the Miami, Potawatomi, Delaware and other Native peoples of Indiana. View art and artifacts from the museum’s collection as well as those on loan from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. This tour is IDOE Academic -standards based, aligned with the visual arts, language arts and social studies subjects. Wee Do Wap
An introductory jazz performance for young children. Students will learn the fundamentals of jazz, with tunes ranging from Duke Ellington to nursery rhymes. Students will sing along with “Old McDonald Had a Band”, which introduces the live sounds of a trumpet, tenor sax, piano, and drum set.
Play and Learn!
Foster a young imagination through pretend play, sing-a-longs, gallery art hunts, and hands-on art activities. Suggested for children ages 2 to 5 and their grown-ups. Lessons change weekly.

Students will discover the radically different perspectives of Native Peoples and pioneer settlers who collided in the early years of American history. The cultures of William Henry Harrison and Tecumseh are displayed through folklore, games, and music.
Winter Break Camp
School break camps provide an engaging experience for students during their time out of school. Each day offers a different topic for new experiences. Camps are sold by day, allowing parents to choose the date and theme that works for their families.

How do snow crystals form? Why do some animals hibernate? How do animals stay warm during the cold, blustery season? Investigate these questions and more as we discover the science of winter.
Friday, Jan. 4 | Art with Bricks
We’ll get creative using bricks of all shapes and sizes to create a variety of print patterns, sculptures and artwork in a rainbow of colors.
Bob Sander will engage students in an interactive program of folktales from around the world. Guitar music is woven into these attention-capturing tales. Bob can tailor the stories to the countries your students are studying.
Worming Into Books by Bonnie Stahlecker
This workshop will capitalize on the student’s knowledge of earthworms by introducing them to bookmaking, illustration and different writing styles. Each student will make a cleverly folded book with room for a long illustration of a worm and four pages of writing. The students will have the choice to create a fictional tale about their worm or they can make their worms realistic and write reports full of worm facts.
Teachers are encouraged to read Herman and Marguerite: An Earth Story by J. O’Callahan or Diary of a Worm, prior to visit.
