    Category: Hand-Lettered Signage
This hand-lettered sign, displayed on a building on E Tenth Street, displays the message “Hebrew Israelite: Home of the Truth, 1 West 125 Harlem.” The sign also features the initials ISUPK on either edge of the building. Hand-lettered signs are popular due to their accessibility as an art form – since making a sign doesn’t require any fancier tools or training, it’s a way for those at any skill level to express themselves through art.
  • Lotus Flowers
    Lotus Flowers
Category: Mural; Traffic Signal Box Art
Artist Tosca Carranza was commissioned by Near East Area Renewal to paint five traffic signal control boxes along Rural Street, in a series called “I Love My Neighborhood.”  Stylized lotus flowers were chosen for this box because they represent universal peace. The lotus is also a symbol of resilience: even when its roots are in the dirtiest waters the plant still produces beautiful flowers every morning, and dried lotus seeds up to two hundred years old have regenerated to produce a living plant. Tosca Carranza is a painter and art educator who lives on Indianapolis’ Near Eastside.
