The term “striation” is often used in the field of geology to indicate grooves made by time and movement. This concept also applies to the idea of a community: a group of separate, unique and historied individuals collectively moving forward. The sculpture is intended as a representation of diversity within unity. Its bright colors, upward movement, and graceful form invoke feelings of hope, inspiration, and innovation. Its two materials, metal and wood, offer ideas of harmony and togetherness while providing insight into the contrasts of the artistic collaboration that created it. The natural material expresses calm and highlights the formal elements of the shape, while the colorful sweeping blades define the overall form. As the viewer moves around the sculpture they can experience the changes in curves, color, and contrasting amount of each of the artistic mediums.
Project One is a studio practice of Indianapolis-based artists, designers, and fabricators committed to craft, experience, and authenticity. They use innovative, often intricate systems to guide pattern development, construction techniques, and texture building. As public artists, they collaborate nationally with architects, landscape architects, engineers, municipalities, and consultants to activate public and private spaces in ways that excite curiosity, welcome play, and delight the imagination.
Kimberly McNeelan is an Indianapolis based furniture maker and sculptor, who celebrates nature and healthy living through art. Kimberly is a frequent contributor for Woodworker’s Journal, a woodworking instructor at the Indianapolis Art Center, and a professor at Butler University. She received her MFA in 2016 from Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, Indiana. Kimberly has been featured many times on HGTV, received several public art grants, has work in collections across the country, and believes that: “It’s not just woodworking. It’s a lifestyle.”
The artwork was commissioned by Kite Realty as part of the Public Art for Neighborhoods Program of the City of Indianapolis.
