This mural was commissioned by the 125-year-old Indianapolis Recorder organization for their facility. It depicts a Black man reading the Indianapolis Recorder newspaper, representing the idea of cultural legacy within the Black community and the younger generation carrying on the legacy for the next 125 years. The artist, who had been on a self-imposed hiatus from painting, was inspired by her then-recent work on the Arts Council’s Murals for Racial Justice initiative and the Indiana Avenue Black Lives Matter temporary street mural, and eagerly accepted the challenge to acknowledge and elevate the role of the Recorder in the life of Black Indianapolis.
Amiah Mims is an Indianapolis-based artist, illustrator, and graphic designer. While pursuing a successful stint as a student athlete at Kent State University, she received her B.A. in Visual Communications Design. At the time of the mural’s creation, she was working as a graphic designer for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
