Darrell Staggs, Fine Art Photographer, retired Associate Engineering Advisor, Eli Lilly and Co
“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.“ This quote from Henry David Thoreau has provided a definition and direction for my photography in the years since my transition from simply capturing shots to creating images. The Creation of an image must begin first with a creation by Nature or Man, then the eye to Look, the mind to See, and then the finger to push the button
My work presents collections of images to provide visitors the opportunity to see The Journey, Illusions, The World We Live In, and Colors and Flows all around us. Although the artist was formally trained as an engineer, visitors should not expect extended discussion of the technical attributes of creating images – except, perhaps, the instances where a technical failure has led to a visual success. I strive to present images that satisfy the “Three Second” criteria – to comprehend and SEE the image, the viewer desires, or needs, to look at the image longer than the digital slide show default time of three seconds. Studies at MIT have shown that the human mind can capture and comprehend a predictable image in as little as 0.1 second. I strive for images that are not predictable.
