I grew up in a typical Midwestern family in Michigan. Always interested in art, but discouraged from following it as a career, I obtained a degree in accounting from Michigan State University. After spending many years in bondage as an accountant, I finally broke free and returned to school to pursue a degree in fine arts. As a graduate of Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, with a BFA in Ceramics, I continue to pursue my love of everything creative.

Way back in 1995, I took a wheel throwing class in my last year as an undergrad. I loved it! But I didn’t get near another wheel all through graduate school or for the next decade as I built my career in conservation. Life was and continues to be crazy busy as I play with maps at work, get to travel for work and fun, garden, camp, play and dance with my wonderful husband and friends. In 2011, I got back behind the wheel again. I was delighted to find wonderful little studio, Beech Grove Clayworks, that offered affordable pottery classes nearby. Since then, I’ve been a member of the studio and have been obsessively throwing pots ever since! I still take classes at the BGCW and help out at the studio.  Then I spend all the extra hours I can kicking the wheel in my tiny studio tucked into the corner of my garage in the Fountain Square neighborhood of Indianapolis.

  • Ryan Blake
    Ryan Blake
    Visual Arts: Ceramics, Conservation/Restoration, Earthworks
The work of Ryan Blake shows an influence of nature and natural processes. Blake’s work also displays a simplicity of form. He holds in high regard, those cultures which are centered on a balance as well spiritually display a connection to nature. Blake’s exploration of other mediums led him back into ceramics with an even deeper sense of meaning. His beliefs around art as communication is not limited to clay; even though there is a sense of loyalty shown to it. To Blake, clay has a healing power; clay is therapy. Clay is a means to connect with people; to bring meaning and make sense of this world.

    Peggy Breidenbach
    Visual Arts: Ceramics, Sculpture
Peggy Breidenbach is an Indianapolis-based ceramic artist and educator. Her sculptural work mines her own life experiences – growing-up, mothering, loss, aging and the fragile beauty of now – to not only better understand her humanity, but also to remind viewers of theirs.   In addition to time in her studio, her practice includes journaling, reading, poetry and time outdoors. Her ceramic forms reference those found in nature – seeds, bones, stones and fossils – artifacts of the living world. By enlarging them to elevate their beauty and impact, they become potent metaphors for themes she aims to explore.   Peggy came to ceramics as a second career and has developed her craft over many years of university and art center classes, numerous workshops and much trial and error. She has taught ceramics at the Indianapolis Art Center since 2003. She regularly exhibits her work in shows in Indiana and beyond. Her website is www.peggybreidenbach.com.

Visual Arts: Ceramics, Functional and/or Decorative, Illustration, Mixed Media, Sculpture
I’ve been working with ceramics for over 20 years. Over these 20+ years, I’ve grown an appreciation for clay’s ability to deeply connect with its end users. There is something special about holding a handmade mug that industrially manufactured mugs simply cannot compete with. I akin handmade mugs to being able to shake the creator’s hand every day (literally). This connection to the creator spans time and space, creating a unique opportunity to get to know the maker on a personal level. I hope my audience can take this connection away from my work and to those that have, I am forever grateful for the opportunity to connect with you.

I am an artist, a yoga teacher, and a student. I came to art as a way to express myself, enter a flow state, and heal. I teach yoga for the same reasons. I provide a space for my students to heal themselves and get into that flow state, us artists love. In my work I love to explore different levels of consciousness or reality, emotions, and my perspective on life. I enjoy creating works around the concepts behind life, energy, the soul, and my life experiences (present and past). Oil is the medium I love but I also enjoy ceramics. I love to write about my life in my blog and someday hope to take my writing more professionally, as well as my artist career.

    Christopher Dance
Visual Arts: Ceramics, Film, Murals, Performance Art, Portrait, Sculpture, Visual Arts Instructor
Christopher Dance Biography Christopher M. Dance is a figurative sculptor from Indianapolis, IN. Dance’s classical figurative approach exists as an anachronism and also as a celebration of history, craft, and the beauty and mystery of the human form and psyche. He is a classically trained artist who studied at Herron School of Art and Design, as well as in Italy. Dance has been a teacher at Pike High School in Indianapolis for 12 years serving as the main ceramics and sculpture instructor. Universal themes and delicate mysteries evoke the power and drama of the posture and gesture, and create a play between subject and viewer. Dance is intrigued by what the form reveals and conceals by ways of movement and dialogue and seeks to capture the moment where physicality bends to the realm of the unseen and the magic of our everyday existence is revealed. As an educator at a school where over 90 languages are spoken, and countless cultural narratives are represented, he seeks to incorporate this multicultural slice of life and spirit into these static objects. He wants to show the tension, and release that as the shared human struggle, and to create a connecting point for these stories to live and breathe and change in a way that only that only stories of collective imagination can do. His work has been featured on Fox59, WFYI Public Radio, Indianapolis Star, and NUVO Indy. Dance’s works are in the permanent collection of the Kurt Vonnegut Museum, Center for Victim and Human Rights, and Big Car Collaborative.

Just a young artist trying all the things. Born and raised in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. I went to Hendrix College and graduated in May 2020 with my art degree. I moved to Indianapolis in February 2020. I currently have my art for sale at a local business: Relics Redesigned. You should definitely look them up. Graphic Arts; Visual Arts: Ceramics, Graphic Arts, Illustration, Media and Visual Communications, Photography, Sculpture
Cindi Elkins holds an AAS degree in Visual Communications/Multimedia Applications from Ivy Tech Community College and BFA degree from Indiana University, Herron School of Art and Design, with a focus on Ceramics and Psychology. During her academic career Ms. Elkins was a Nina Mason Pulliam Scholar, Interned in the Marketing Department of Ivy Tech Community College, and received a grant to develop her concept of Planar Planks, a new art medium to be administered in Art Therapy, from Indiana University, Purdue University Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program. As an artist, Ms. Elkins has been exhibited in various mediums; work in Digital Imaging at the Commons Gallery and the Stutz Gallery, work in Ceramics receiving honorable mention, at the Herron Galleries, Indy Clay Co-Op and The Reflected Light Exhibition, and Illustrative work displayed in a group exhibition at the Harrison Art Center. Currently Ms. Elkins primary focus is ceramics figurative sculpture. The medium she predominantly works is porcelain‐utilizing hand building techniques, such as pinch pot, coil and slab building. As a part of her objective she desires her entire process of sculpture to be done without using armatures to create her pieces. Conceptually the themes of her series deal heavily in expressionism, surrealism, and abstract thinking, derived from her psychology background. The idea to “connect the dots” to what appears to be random challenges her audience to consider why and how does this relate.

With influences from her South American culture and experiences of being an immigrant, Andi is able to capture two cultures from the Latino world to American world. With many remarks of contemporary art, her style leaves much to the imagination, brings a lot of contemplation, and creates a narrative behind every piece with a connection to its name. There are a lot of conceptual influences in the pieces that are not representational.
