Michael Miller

In my two dimensional work, I create pieces that aspire to be realistic and sentimental. I have an obsession for vintage things and often wonder “how could we go back in time?” through my work. I want to create moments in time that convey a feeling of nostalgia from the viewer.  My drawings fall somewhere in the category of naturalism and expressionism for I want them to look real, but also elevate one’s emotions.  My next series will reflect more on these ideals as I will cover subjects from WWII and the families involved.  This new body of work will continue from a fascination with antique obscurities.  

Specifically, I primarily use charcoal with which I create photorealistic drawings that carry deeper concepts.  For example, my work Fluorescent Future portrays how experience and knowledge is the key to extending one’s success.  I use charcoal because I want my work to have a high level of contrast, something that resembles photography way before digital.  Overall, the end goal for a piece I make is for me to share a time capsule of a cold shoulder, a heavy heart, or perhaps a warm embrace.

Graduated from the University of Southern Indiana with a Bachelors in Fine Art. I’m a trained illustrator, painter, muralist, screen-printer, sculptor, woodworker, and carpenter.
