The question ‘what is art’ led me to the following conclusions: 1.) Everyone’s idea of art probably differs vastly. 2.) As soon as someone tries to dictate what art can and cannot be, ignore them. 3.) People tend to compartmentalize everything. Take the colors of a rainbow as a metaphor. As maturing and education expands, we learn that the ‘rainbow colors’ aren’t separate or distinct at all, they’re just generalized sections of what is called the ‘visible light spectrum’. They all fade into and out of one another. But as small children, we don’t quite grasp that. So we compartmentalize. We categorize. Art forms–all of them–I see in the very same way… Absolutely no differences to speak of relative to the fundamental similarities. What is the difference? Everything is completely algebraic, overlapping, and interchangeable. The edge of a stage is something that should draw the audience into the play rather than separating them from it. Show me the edge of the street performer’s stage in central park… Stop trying to compartmentalize and categorize the world. Don’t strip the life out of Life. For me art is an outlet–to let out whatever is inside. Hopefully in doing so, I’ll establish connections with people who thrive in the shadows of life’s grey areas and the fine lines between this and that, here and there, we and they, yours and mine, you and me. Born in wartime Beirut, grew up in south Detroit, and learned life lessons in Chicago… now I live between quartz and the stars in an 1890’s farmhouse nestled in the cornfields of Indiana with my husband Nathan and our daughter Lulu Pearl. I have always admired beauty in various forms and spent many years documenting it through photography. I love to photograph people in their natural element, using natural light, naturally. My shoots are mostly filled with glowing laughter, light, and joy, as I am usually documenting a wedding, birth, party, or something equally wonderful. Those who know me would say that I am loving, nurturing, and a natural entertainer, not the pop song on the radio kind, but one who will bake you fresh bread and serve it with homemade jam when you come to my home. Gemstones & so on… It was five years ago that I started my journey into creating beauty in the form of gemstone jewelry. My jewelry is primarily one of a kind or produced in limited quantities. Each element is hand selected for its luster and interest, then handcrafted with love and care. I mainly work with various forms of quartz such as jade, amethyst, turquoise, pyrite, onyx, drusy and chalcedony. I hand forge many of my components and set stones using silver-smithing techniques. I love to showcase each stone’s organic beauty through my art and I feel great joy to know that my jewelry helps women feel more beautiful on a daily basis. I strive to shop locally and recycle or repurpose as many items as I can. I take all of my photographs in natural light so the colors of my pieces hold true. Every piece has its own unique photographs, as every piece is one of a kind.

“It is not your stereotypical example of classical music, and Salazar is by no means a stereotypical classical musician. That’s a good thing, as his unconventional approach to classical music has helped to open new spaces for the genre.” -NUVO: Indy’s Alternative Voice Salazar holds a B.M. in Clarinet Performance from Ball State University and an M.M. in Clarinet Performance from Bowling Green State University. He currently serves as Director of Community Engagement and Teaching Artist for Classical Music Indy where he manages, books, and promotes over a hundred and fifty performance events a year in Central Indiana. Eric also mentors and hires 30-40 independent classical musicians annually. With their combined efforts this group brings music to over 100,000 Indiana residents a year, with a focus on people who would not otherwise have access to live music performance. Eric’s purpose for writing music is to create art that challenges standards, unites audiences of uncommon backgrounds, and connects souls through creative understanding. Salazar pioneers the New Classical genre. He takes his classical training and fuses together modern electronics with classical instruments, blending ancient styles with present musical trends. Salazar’s connective approach to performing wins the hearts of audiences as he guides them through explorations of raw emotion. Eric Salazar is a Pereira 3D Artist. He plays on a Pereira 3D printed barrel and bell, and 3D printed ligature. Eric Salazar is an emerging artist with international press attention. He has performed as a soloist and group musician in 8 states of the US and overseas in Belgium. Salazar resides in the Indianapolis, IN area. Here, Salazar teaches, performs, composes, records, leads workshops, and presents lectures. Salazar was also a guest contributor to the International Clarinet Association, BuzzReed! His latest clarinet solo album, Soul Search, was released with Centaur Records in 2017. The album contains recordings of Salazar’s original compositions for solo clarinet and electronics. Eric actively writes, commissions, and premieres new works for himself and classical chamber ensembles. He is always on the lookout for talented musicians to engage in collaborative performance projects. His other professional interests include: conducting, social entrepreneurship, social media management, pedagogy, music psychology, marketing, graphic design, and project management. When not writing and performing new music, Salazar enjoys drinking tea, playing soccer, reading comics, playing video games, nightlife, and making people laugh.

Aparna Satheesan, is an internationally acclaimed talented dancer who trained in different classical Indian dance forms like Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattom, Kathakali, Ottam Thullal, Kerala Nadanam from eminent legendary dancers like Padmabushan Dhananjayans(Alumni of Kalakshestra and direct disciple of Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale), Smt. Vyjayanthi Kashi, Regatta Girija Chandran, Nelliyodu Vasudevan Namboothiri. She has been trained in this art form for more that 20 years and has been giving a lot of performances in India and abroad. She is an active member of International Dance Council and State ambassador of IndianRaga. Prestigious events organized by ICCR, Heartland Film festival, Soorya Festival(India), Karur Natyanjali festival(India), Guruvayoor Temple festival, Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana, featured performer at The Balaji temple, Chicago, Samarpana at Vyllopilli Samskruthi Bhavan, Light and Sound Show, Navrathri festival by Soorya Performing Arts, Kala Utsav at Indian Consulate Chicago, feature performer at “A Night in India” Dance production by the famous Gregory Hancock Dance Company, Global Rhythms and many more are some of her major performances. She has won several awards and recognition in this young age and is renowned for her creative dance productions, choreographies and music sense. Performing for an event directed by Great musician Mr. A.R Rahman had added more stars in her career. She is a graceful and talented dancer who excels in nritta as well as abhinaya aspects of dance and also a well-trained nattuvanar. She is also the recipient of National Natya Shiromani Award by India festival USA, and also got awarded as a Kuchipudi fellow at the Globally reputed IndianRaga orgnaization. She also serves as the State Ambassador at IndianRaga. She has been State level winner for various dance forms for Kerala State Youth festivals and Kalathilakam (Overall Champion) for other dance competitions like Sri Chitra Thirunal Cultural Trust and many more. In 2015, She won runner up in Bharatanatyam for one of the biggest Dance Festivals in USA, Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana. She has organized and performed for several charitable events for fund raising. Her recent project on “Transforming lives through dance” was highly appreciated in India and USA. Transforming lives through dance is her initiative to help people in need through dance. Apart from these, she had worked as a VJ for some of the leading television channels like Asianet, Soorya TV, Kairali, Asianet Plus etc. She had also worked as an RJ and dubbing artist for malayalam movies.

During her time at Herron, she earned a BFA in painting and a minor in art history. She currently lives and paints out of her home studio in Brownsburg, IN, and she works as a full-time graphic designer for Sincerely Hers, Inc., located in Bainbridge, IN.

I have spent the majority of my life dedicated to the creation of things. It began with music and has transcended over the years into many other genres of art. My stained glass designs focus on color, texture, shape, and form resulting in unique one-of-kind art, ranging from finished custom framed pieces and refurbished antique windows to smaller window hangings. I’ve been taking photos since I was a kid when my mom gave me an old point and shoot camera. I remember taking photos of sky and cloud formations and somehow trying to capture my imagination on film. That same fascination with nature and the intimate beauty that surrounds us inspires much of my photography today. Music has been a passion for as long as I can remember. It began with making up senseless little songs and trying to write them down in some form to earning a M.A. in music composition. My first obsession was the guitar, over time the banjo and other stringed instruments found there way into my hands. My present obsession has become the violin. I have always strived to create my own voice with my instruments and compositions. The Maple Trio, Blueprintmusic, and my solo work demonstrate my collaborations with other amazingly gifted musicians.

My name is Aaron Scamihorn and I operate my creative endeavors as Ronlewhorn Industries. I focus a lot on digital portrait illustration and hand screen print these portraits on wood, canvas and paper. I am passionate about illustrative imagery with a retro/vintage vibe. Betty J Scarpino

I carve abstract wood sculptures, primarily from local hardwoods! Recently, I have been experimenting with woodcut prints, papermaking, and inking messages on prints. Woodcarving. Embossing. Handmade paper. Scripting words onto prints …. the longer version is below: In 1975, I took woodworking class at the University of Missouri, just for fun. I learned about wood and machinery and how to build furniture. As an after-thought, I was introduced to the wood lathe–woodturning. While in school, I also took sculpture classes where a conversation with the instructor stayed with me. I had asked about the lathe in the back room, “Can woodturning be considered sculpture?” He declared that it couldn’t. I thought otherwise and have explored the possibilities throughout my 40-year career by cutting apart, carving, combining, and painting wood-turned forms (bowls, discs, plates, spheres, pod-shaped cylinders). After all, these forms are the building blocks of sculpture! I am now expanding my repertoire to include embossing, printmaking, papermaking, and written words, pairing those with woodturning and carving. In addition to practicing my craft, I have demonstrated woodturning nationally as well as internationally, taught woodturning and woodcarving workshops at several art and craft schools throughout the U.S., given presentations at various conferences, and been employed as the editor-in-chief of an international journal dedicated to the field of woodturning. I also author articles for magazines and journals. Currently, my art-making practice is my primary focus. More than two dozen museums include my work in their permanent collections, I am represented in numerous private collections, and–best of all–my family and friends enjoy living with my creations!

For 72 years, Schiedt has photographed jazz musicians and researched jazz history. He has published four books titled, “Ain’t Misbehavin,” “The Jazz State of Indiana,” “Twelve Lives in Jazz,” and most recently “Jazz in Black and White.” He has also mounted exhibitions at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Canon Art Institute in Ohio, the Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkart, Ind., and many other venues. In June of 2007, Mr. Schiedt exhibited side by side with Ansel Adams in Elkhart, Indiana.

My private art collection consists of Pre-Columbian, African-Oceanic and most recently, Ethnographic works form Indonesia. Like the primitive artist, my sculptures have minimal detail, clean lines, and positive optimistic rounded forms. When possible, they also include movement, action, and humor.

Many of my small paintings on re-used packaging reflect images I see on my East Side: street style; architecture and interiors; people of different ethnicities. Others express spiritual themes; faith traditions; peace in nature. Some are simply whimsies: imagined moments, places, patterns. Travels and quiet time spent in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are sources of inspiration. Original paintings- from fleeting thoughts and mental images to the act of applying paint to cardboard surface- on a material meant to be disposed of after consumption of the product, is somehow purposeful and satisfying to me. Nine years ago my husband and I purchased an abandoned house in the old Holy Cross neighborhood, just east of the downtown, and restored it; my “studio” is my kitchen table. Our little 1880’s cottage is the only original home on the block, as an explosion of new construction changes the profile of these Irish immigrant houses. I hope Holy Cross can maintain a balance between old and new, and that the diversity in home ownership of our neighborhood won’t be lost.
