My life is a very diverse book of many pages. For this, we shall begin, when my Artistic Me, began. In Dec of 2009 I became a victim of a violent crime. I had to undergo numerous surgeries, one of which was to save fingers on both hands. After months of therapy and searching for ways to get me to want to use my hands properly, I was given a camera. A light turned on in my soul. I started seeing and noticing things I never took the time to see before. Through all the hardships I have endured, the one blessing I hold onto is the chance to meet all the great and amazing clients, artists and supporters I have gotten to meet. Before, had I died, I would have been thought of as a good father, productive member of society and so on. Now, i get to help people leave their mark, their legacy, upon the World through my photography. Kaila Austin is a painter and mixed media artist based out of Indianapolis, Indiana. She has been a participant in Murals for Racial Justice with the Arts Council of Indianapolis and has been interviewed for several magazines emphasizing Black arts and culture across the United States. Currently, she has a painting studio located at 201 Studios, where she also works as a bookbinder and printmaker.    Austin works primarily in mixed media portraiture, focusing on the ways in which the arts can humanize Blackness after centuries of visual culture that has been subversive and noxious. Working traditionally in oil portraits, she has spent the last year expanding her work into mixed media loosen the rigidity tied to classical notions of what art is supposed to be.  She primarily uses community members from around Indianapolis as the subject of her work, seeking to elevate everyday people and common people to the grandeur of historical narrative paintings.

  • Keith Blanton
    Keith Blanton
Visual Arts: Mixed Media, Murals, Painting, Visual Arts Instructor, Works on paper
Keith Monroe Blanton, born in 1951 to a farming family whose roots can be found in their 1832 homestead farm located on the northeast side of Indianapolis. My earliest memories are of the beautiful people and images associated with the family farms. Beginning with the ability to hold a pencil, I have always sketched and painted the beauty that God has placed around me. It is where I find my peace and my calling. Like most people, my interests over the years have been divided. I received my education in Engineering from Purdue University. The skills that I possess in Art are gifts from God. I have had no formal educational training in Art. My early and middle adult years were spent on the pursuit of an engineering career in the design and construction supervision of roads and bridges throughout Indiana. But, my love has always been in the art of oil painting. To capture on canvas the moment in time, the sparkle in the eye, and yes the very spirit and soul of the person, object, or scene that I am painting. I have always loved the work and passion found in the paintings of the old masters. My years of work as an engineer has aided in the further development of an eye for finite details and an absolute desire to create an heirloom that will be loved and will be cherished for generations.   The paintings of Keith Blanton have been on display at Mayor Ballard’s office, the Mayor of Indianapolis and have been at galleries in Indianapolis, Zionsville, Fishers, Greenwood, South Bend, Goshen, and Plymouth, all in Indiana. Keith has also received awards at shows and exhibits throughout Indiana; the following are a list of a few:   The Indiana State Fair: over the past 30 years, numerous ribbons have been received ranging from “Third Place” to “Honorable Mention”   DeFries Gardens: In the 2010 Garden Art Show received the following two awards: “Best of Show” and “Honorable Mention”   Heartland Regional Art Exhibition in 2009 received the “Popular Choice Award”   Spencer Gallery, 2012 NIA Exhibit, received the “Judges Award”

My work is an exploration of the visual texts that exist in the conscious and unconscious mind-texts that speak to the personal experience of this artist, but connect too with the larger social, political, cultural milieu in which the personal is lived. I paint primarily figurative work with a strong conceptual sensibility in the traditional medium of oil on canvas, but my work is informed by the way current technologies like the Internet combine the audio/visual, written expression, commercial graphics, and even film to explore human experience.
